Procedure for Ordering this Item
Because of the many types of aventails that we can provide, we do not stock all of the types of that are available as it is not practical for us to do so.
If any aventails that we may have in stock are not what you are after please contact us so we can arrange manufacture for you. Please allow at least 90 days for delivery. We require a 50% non-refundable deposit if you want us to go ahead and order it.
Product Details
Available in 2 sizes.
In both Large and Medium aventails the attached leather band is 54 cm long and it will fit most helmets around 60 cm - 62 cm circumference.
In the Medium version the width of the mail is 26cm from edge of the leather band and in the Large version it is 33 cm.
Some of the 14th/early 15th century helmets that we stock come with attached vervailles (metal lugs with holes in them). The buyer needs to cut small holes in the leather band that line up with the vervailles. The aventail can be held in place by a thin copper or brass wire that runs through the holes in the vervailles (even a small diameter cord or leather thong will do). If your helmet does not have vervailles then you can drill a row of fine holes about 1 cm apart around the rim of the helmet and sew the leather band directly to the helmet.
The large aventail illustrated here on the custom made pig-face bascinet is my own personal one which I used for jousting. Note the generous spread of the maille over the upper chest and shoulders. The hem of the aventail has been decorated with brass edged dags. Note we cannot provide a finished aventail like this but have illustrated this one here to show what can be done with our standard aventail.
