14th Century Visored Bascinet

NZ$350.00

Product Details

The late medieval bascinet is an ideal helmet for a heavily armoured mounted medieval knight. It was quite popular among medieval armies because of its versatility and good balance between protection and mobility. You can attach one of our maille aventails (sold separately) to its vervelles, and you will have great protection for most forms of reenactment combat.

This historic reproduction is handmade from sturdy 14-gauge (2mm) mild steel, lined with a comfortable and secure padded liner. A large circumference makes it fit almost all head sizes.

The height is about 24 cm, the inner depth from front to back at eye level measures about 24.5 cm, the inner width at ear level is about 21 cm, and the eye slits are about 18 cm long and 0.9 cm wide. This helmet has an inner circumference of 68 cm (before padded liner attachment) and will fit most head circumferences from about 58 cm to 61 cm, depending on the shape of the wearer’s head. If you desire to wear an additional padded cap, then measure your head circumference while wearing it. (The padded liner already attached inside the helmet is usually enough for most adult male heads). The face opening behind the visor is about 15 cm long and has a maximum width of about 17.5 cm. Weight is about 3.680 kilograms.

There is a small holder at the back of the helmet for a feather or several feathers. These allowed for the wearer to be identifiable in combat.

Note: This product is carefully coated with a layer of oil when packaged that acts as a temporary (protective) layer against corrosion (rust), which can easily be wiped off using any oil remover or even a dry cloth.

Price includes GST and tracked shipping within New Zealand.
